Traffic Management

Integrated Traffic Management Center Stuttgart (IVLZ)

Stuttgart is located at the centre of a thriving economic region with a high incidence of traffic. Mobility is a major factor in determining the attraction of the city as an industrial location and as a place in which to live and work, and the need for greater mobility is set to increase. However, the topographic circumstances of the city and its outlying areas preclude any appreciable expansion of the existing transport infrastructure. A growing number of public transport and road users are forced to share a finite pool of transport resources, resulting in congestion on main arterial routes, delays on the railways and oversubscribed car parks.

Stuttgart's Integrated Traffic Management Centre Stuttgart (IVLZ) seeks to address these problem issues: Since the beginning of 2006, this agency has been implementing an innovative system of traffic management taking in all modes of transport which is unique anywhere in Germany.

Comprehensive information about the traffic situation in Stuttgart is gathered by four different partner organizations:

  • The Stuttgart Office of Public Affairs
  • The Stuttgart Civil Engineering Department
  • The public transport operator SSB AG
  • The Stuttgart Police Department
Data is centrally collated and evaluated at the IVLZ. It is then used to pro-actively influence the traffic situation through the use of information displays, parking direction systems and flexible traffic light programming.

The IVLZ is housed in the Security and Mobility Management Centre (SIMOS) in the district of Bad Cannstatt. This building is also home to the Fire Department and Emergency Services and to the Operational and Administrative Headquarters of the State capital. This means that all the agencies responsible for mobility and security in Stuttgart are housed collectively under one roof, with wide-ranging benefits for all concerned - from joint utilization of the available technical infrastructure through to fast and unburocratic communication.
